Retrieving Salesforce Org metadata, along with its dependent metadata, can be challenging. One common technique to retrieve the metadata and its dependency is bundling them in a Salesforce Package and retrieving the components by package name using the Salesforce CLI command. This video is for you if you want to move all the metadata in your org to source control like git in minimal steps.
If you do not want to type commands for retrieving metadata from the package, create a shortcut for typing commands in visual studio code using VSCode tasks. An example task file for retrieving the metadata from the package is at this link https://gist.github.com/msrivastav13/b0c2ac1bc84bdf959e58092a4932bb6b
